Wake Up Call to Reading
Have you ever thought about what our civilization will look like in 30 years?
Maybe you’re too busy trying to get through the day; you know, cleaning up after dinner, getting the kids to bed, taking the dog out one more time for the night, and thinking about what you’ll wear tomorrow.
But just stop for a minute or two, and allow yourself to imagine how our kids’ and grandkids’ lives will be if only 30% of them can read well enough to understand how the government is deceiving us about an economic problem, or the health industry is hoping we’ll commit to an invasive procedure “for the health of our nation”, or the media is telling us that we need to “go along to get along” over a harmful trend.
Understanding the truths behind these things requires critical thinking that comes from “reading between the lines” and peeling back layers of words to get to the core truth. That skill isn’t accessible today to 70% of our students.
70% of our kids today read superficially, some only identifying the words they’re reading (but not the meaning of the words) and others…well…they’re illiterate. They can’t read at all.
This is a HUGE problem, folks! Do you all not understand how fundamental, how crucial it is to put our energy into making sure our children can read?
If you’re a parent, or if you’re a teacher in touch with your students’ parents, you can help. Simply encourage parents to read with their kids. Carving out time for this is the MOST IMPORTANT step that can be taken to ensure they’re on the right path to reading proficiency.
Schedule a regular time to read with your kids, and do it today.
