How to get Books to Readers

Learning to read

Perhaps you know that illiteracy is a problem in our nation. Maybe you’ve heard the statistics about how many of today’s kids are either superficial readers or illiterate. But did you know you can help?

As a member of a church, school, community organization, or even in the place where you work you can help by initiating a book drive. The goal is to get books into the hands of families that don’t have many — if any — books for their kids to read.

Books are expensive. People living on mid-to-low and low-income budgets do not buy books for their kids. There isn’t a lot of extra cash lying around.

Gather together a few people who would be interested in helping. Have a meeting and draw up a list of the tasks required to carry out a book drive. Consider:

  • How would you collect the books?

  • Who is going to go through them to make sure they’re gently used?

  • How are you going to sort them?

  • How will you let the community know about them?

  • How will you get the books into the hands of families?

Work with a group of people and delegate so the work and time investment is balanced out.

Let’s give kids a chance to get into some GREAT books!
