How to get Books to Readers
Perhaps you know that illiteracy is a problem in our nation. Maybe you’ve heard the statistics about how many of today’s kids are either superficial readers or illiterate. But did you know you can help?
As a member of a church, school, community organization, or even in the place where you work you can help by initiating a book drive. The goal is to get books into the hands of families that don’t have many — if any — books for their kids to read.
Books are expensive. People living on mid-to-low and low-income budgets do not buy books for their kids. There isn’t a lot of extra cash lying around.
Gather together a few people who would be interested in helping. Have a meeting and draw up a list of the tasks required to carry out a book drive. Consider:
How would you collect the books?
Who is going to go through them to make sure they’re gently used?
How are you going to sort them?
How will you let the community know about them?
How will you get the books into the hands of families?
Work with a group of people and delegate so the work and time investment is balanced out.
Let’s give kids a chance to get into some GREAT books!
